Plate-fin heat exchangers consist of a series of fin surfaces sandwiched between parting sheets and stacked together. The introduced fin work as a secondary surface, and increase the heat transfer area and transfer heat to fluid through parting sheets, enlarge fluid turbulence and enhance the local convective heat transfer coefficient to increase the efficiency of heat transfer. With the exception of the fluid inlets and outlets, the edges of each layer are sealed with side bars which give the unit mechanical strength and prevent fluids from leaking to the atmosphere. Fins are introduced in the design of compact heat exchangers because of a secondary surface, fin can transfer heat to fluid streams through parting sheets. Moreover, because of higher thermal conductivity, heat transfer is more efficient. In addition to this, fins can increase the fluid turbulence and enhance the local convective heat transfer coefficient. Typically, there are four categories of fins, namely, plain fin, louver fin, serrated fin (offset strip fin) and wavy fin (herringbone fin).
